Materials In Action

"I am interested in electronic clothing because of the exciting applications for textiles that can communicate, textiles that can sense vital signs for biomedical and military applications, and integrated electronics in everyday clothing for aesthetic expression."

— Kristy Jost, recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP) and the DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship (NDSEG)

Research Highlights

These images were taken during diametrical compression on the Skyscan 1172 MicroCT.  The instrument allows fully 3D, non-destructive evaluation of the internal structure and composition of a specimen based on differences in x-ray absorption.  With the aid of a mechanical testing stage, diametrical compression tests can be interrupted at any load and the specimen can be scanned to obtain full three dimensional analysis of failure.  To learn more about the MicroCT system, visit the MicroCT site.
