As we dig out from under the snow here in Philadelphia, we are warmed by the collaboration, camaraderie, and scholarship found in our research labs, classrooms, and social gathering spaces.

Li Receives Humboldt Fellowship
Professor Christopher Li, associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers.
Li will spend six months in Germany at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research to collaborate with Professor Hans-Jürgen Butt on the topic of "Tailored Molecular Structure and Morphology of Conjugated Polymers for bulk hetero-junction hybrid solar cells." read more
Y-Carbon Receives 2009 "Company to Watch" Enterprise Award
Y-Carbon, the start-up company of Trustee Chair Professor Yury Gogotsi, former Ph.D. student Ranjan Dash (MBA/Ph.D. '06), and former Drexel post-doc Gleb Yushin (now assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology) has received a 2009 "Company to Watch" award at the Enterprise Awards presented by Eastern Technology Council. read more
Alumnus Diran Apelian Receives 2010 Robert Earll McConnell Award from AIME
MSE alumnus Dr. Diran Apelian (B.S. 1968) has been selected to receive the 2010 Robert Earll McConnell Award from the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The award was presented during the AIME's annual banquet and awards ceremony in Seattle on Feb. 16. read more
Department Welcomes Professor Steven May
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven May as assistant professor, effective September 1, 2009. At Drexel, Dr. May’s research group focuses on oxide materials for energy applications.
Graduating with his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 2007, Dr. May’s dissertation work concentrated on the synthesis and electrical characterization of magnetic semiconductors. Dr. May received his undergraduate degree in engineering science from Pennsylvania State University, where his research focused on improving the performance of amorphous silicon solar cells. read more
Co-PI Zavaliangos and Affiliated Faculty Member Lowman Receive DoEd GAANN Grant
Professor Antonios Zavaliangos (Co-PI) and affiliated faculty member Professor Anthony Lowman (PI) of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) and Associate Vice Provost for Research are the recipients of a $653,280 Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) award from the Department of Education. The three-year grant, "GAANN: Engineering for Pharmaceutical Applications," goes into effect August 15, 2009 and is a need-based fellowship that funds Ph.D. students who will receive exceptional training in research and education in the field of engineering for pharmaceutical applications. read more
Doherty Selected to Receive Cyril Stanley Smith Award
Emeritus Professor Roger D. Doherty has been selected to receive the Cyril Stanley (C.S.) Smith Award by the International Committee of the international conference on Recrystallization and Grain Growth to be held July 4-9, 2010 in Sheffield, UK, the 4th conference in a series. Roger will be presented with the award on Monday, July 5th, 2010. read more
Honoring Judy Trachtman for 40 years of service
You are invited to join the Drexel University Department of Materials Science and Engineering as we honor Judy Trachtman for 40 years of service and wish her well upon her retirement.
The event will take place Friday, April 30, 2010 in the A. J. Drexel Picture Gallery on the 3rd floor of the Main Building.
