Ph.D. Student Matthew Hood Wins First Place at TAFDV Meeting

Ph.D. student Matthew Hood (advisor:  Christopher Li) placed first in a poster competition at the Thermal Analysis Forum of Delaware Valley (TAFDV) meeting on Wednesday, December 8, 2010.

The work presented on the poster was on the addition of silicon dioxide nanoparticles into a segmented polyurethane matrix. Modification of processing conditions changed the bonds between the particle and matrix to be either physical or chemical. Thermal analysis was used to determine the location of the nanoparticles in the two phase segmented polyurethane matrix. Particle location was used to explain the extraordinarily high elongation-at-break observed at low nanoparticles loading (2100% at just 0.5 weight percent nanoparticle addition during synthesis).
