MSE Celebrates 40 Years of Graduating Ph.D.s

In 2009, Drexel University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering is pleased to mark 40 years of graduating Ph.D. students.  In commemoration of this impressive milestone, the department held one of two celebratory events on Friday, May 1, 2009 as part of Drexel’s Blue and Gold Days.

Alumni/ae, current and former faculty, staff, current Ph.D. students, and honored guests gathered in the A. J. Drexel Picture Gallery Friday evening to pay tribute to the department’s legacy of distinguished Ph.D. alumni/ae.  Memories were shared over cocktails and dinner.  A continuous slideshow of quotations from alumni/ae and snapshots from long-time staff member Judy Trachtman’s photo library ran in the background.

Department Head Antonios Zavaliangos recognized several key alumni/ae in attendance for their achievements including:

Harry Antes, Ph.D., Oldest Graduating Ph.D. Student
Ranjan Dash, Ph.D., First Ph.D./M.B.A. Student
Subash Khatri, Ph.D., Most Successful Alumnus in Business
Sharvan Kumar, Ph.D., First Ph.D. to Work in Academia
Eugene Shapiro, Ph.D., First Ph.D. Class
Frederick Schmidt, Ph.D., Longest Time Between M.S. and Ph.D.

In honor of her service to the department and to the field of materials science and engineering, Judy Trachtman, academic and financial coordinator, was surprised with an Alpha Sigma Mu scarf from alumnus Fred Schmidt, Ph.D.

Additionally, Fred presented Professor Rick Knight as one of two inaugural Fellows of Alpha Sigma Mu.  Rick received a certificate, a pin, and a plaque to commemorate the honor.

Alpha Sigma Mu is the materials science and engineering honors society.

The department will again mark the occasion of 40 years of Ph.D. graduates at the Materials Science and Technology 2009 (MS&T) conference in Pittsburgh in October.  Details are forthcoming.
