Wegst, Schauer, and Lelkes Receive NSF Grant

Dr. Ulrike Wegst (PI) and Dr. Caroline Schauer (co-PI) of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and Dr. Peter Lelkes (co-PI) of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems have received an NSF grant entitled, "Mineralized Electrospun Chitosan Nanofibers as Bone Scaffolds."

The aim of the project is to test the hypothesis that, by mineralizing chitosan fibers, a ceramic-based bone substitute material can

be created for low and medium load-bearing applications that combines the strength and stiffness of the ceramic phase with an increased toughness through fiber reinforcement. The long-term goal is to provide materials for optimal repair of craniofacial and orthopedic skeletal defects, which would otherwise require a bone graft from a second surgical site.  The budget for this two-year project is $315,297.
