Ph.D. Student Jennifer Atchison Wins First Place in Chemical & Engineering News Photo Contest

Ph.D. student Jennifer Atchison's award-winning image, "Nanoscape Still Life"

Ph.D. student Jennifer Atchison (advisor:  Caroline Schauer) has won first place in the inaugural Chemical & Engineering News photo contest.  Jennifer’s award winning image is of a cluster of silicon nanocones grown in a chemical vapor deposition chamber through gold catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid technique. Her image was captured in Professor Jonathan Spanier’s laboratory using an Amray Scanning Electron Microscope.

Ph.D. students Marjorie Austero and Keith Fahnestock, also in Professor Schauer's Natural Polymers and Photonics Group, both received Honorable Mention for their images.  Marjorie's image shows fine-fibered material created when adding excess cross-linker to chitosan.  Keith's image portrays the unexpected results of a chitosan-electrospinning run.

The contest attracted 250 submissions for the theme "Your Science Up Close."

Marjorie's and Keith's images also appeared in the "Pics of the Week" in Central Science.
