MSE Welcomes New Faculty Dr. James Rondinelli

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is pleased to welcome Dr. James Rondinelli as assistant professor, effective September 1, 2011.

Dr. Rondinelli is currently an Argonne Scholar and Joseph Katz Distinguished Fellow in the X-ray Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory.  He received a Ph.D. in 2010 in Materials Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a premier Materials Department which is ranked 1st in both S- and R- rankings according to the National Research Council rankings from 2010.  He also received a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, cum laude, from Northwestern University in 2006.

Dr. Rondinelli has received the 2010 MRS Graduate Student Gold Award.  He was also awarded both an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and NDSEG Fellowship in 2007.  He has studied abroad in Japan, Ireland, and India.

Dr. Rondinelli’s research interests are in first principles studies of electronic and magnetic properties in complex oxides and fluorides, a class of materials that is expected to play a major role in energy applications, as well as new generations of electronic devices.  An accomplished scholar and researcher, he has published papers in prestigious journals, including Nature Nanotechnology and Physical Reviews, among others.
