Co-Op in Materials: Student Profiles

A co-op in Materials brings with it industry connections and real-world experiences that a classroom education can never duplicate. But you don't have to take our word for it! Below are some of our students' experiences—what they did, what they learned, and how it's helped them.

Keith Fahnestock: International Co-op

My third and final coop with IEMN opened my eyes to academic research. Before this coop, I had every intention of graduating directly into a job in the polymer industry, but after working side by side with doctoral and post-doctoral students, I realized that this was something incredibly interesting, and more than that, something that I wanted to do myself.

Anthony Musey Anthony Musey: Specialty Materials Co-Op Experience

"The best part about working while in school is to see the real world application of what you’re learning in the classroom."

Derrick Smith: Biomaterials Co-Op Experience

"There's a lot more that goes behind a small little screw than I would have guessed. From working in the materials science field in an analytical lab, manufacturing, marketing, and now product development, I've gotten to experience all the different aspects of making "stuff" and know what I love to do, and what I certainly don't want to be caught stuck doing, making me more appreciative of what I do like."
